The Read 180 program is an essential support for high school students who struggle with reading because it provides targeted, individualized instruction designed to build both skills and confidence. Through a combination of direct instruction, adaptive technology, and engaging texts, students receive the help they need at their specific reading level while progressing toward grade- level proficiency. The program not only strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency but also fosters a sense of achievement that can transform how students view themselves as learners. Ultimately, Read 180 helps students gain the literacy skills necessary for success in all academic areas and beyond high school.

What inspired you to become an educator/choose your profession? For the first two and a half years at university, I was an undecided major who was focused on getting an education that would allow me to make a lot of money. During my junior year, I had a professor that was extremely inspiring to me. He strayed from what I considered to be a "normal" English class and facilitated discussion that really helped me see literature through multiple different lenses, which allowed me to start seeing day-to-day life in different ways. To make a long story short, he shared a little anecdote about how Oakland University could not pay him and he would still show up to teach. That anecdote allowed me to see that purpose was more valuable than money, and I thought my life would be most meaningful if I could impact a single student in a similar way.

Physics & ACC Physics: It’s important to expose students to key concepts that match their current ability level while also introducing material slightly above it. This balance helps build confidence and ensures understanding of foundational skills, while the more challenging content stretches their thinking and promotes growth. When students are regularly exposed to higher-level ideas, they develop perseverance, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in new ways —key skills for long-term academic success and lifelong learning. A great idea to combine classes to expose students to new learning opportunities!
Lakeview will provide a safe, supportive learning environment with opportunities for each student to develop the skills and knowledge to become a responsible, successful citizen.
